The concept of working and travelling the world at the same time is becoming increasingly tempting for many. Leaving their nine-to-five office cubicles, they trade for more exciting and fulfilling lives on “greener” sides.
Digital nomads, as we call them, earn a living by working online or remotely at their chosen (various) locations.
Following the work-from-home boom created by the Covid-19 pandemic, the digital nomad idea has garnered more attention, where even governments around the world are trying to catch up by introducing special visas or passes to allow digital nomads to work in their respective countries legally.
Malaysia, for instance, has recently introduced De rantau, a programme that allows foreigners working in the information technology field to work and reside in the country (*only in Peninsular Malaysia at the time of writing) for up to 12 months. The programme facilitates locals too who want to experience living in different parts of their own homeland.
Although the spontaneity and surprises of new places may sound exciting and fun, finding an accommodation can be a little daunting if you are not familiar with the locale, especially if you are stepping into the country or state for the first time.
So let us give you a hand here with some locations (of course, with good internet connections) that you can consider for setting up your short-term home-office. At the same time, take your pick on co-working spaces around your area.
Ampang, Kuala Lumpur
A locale that is famous with a line-up of embassies and expat groups, digital nomads may find this area very convenient as it is located in the centre of the lively capital city of Kuala Lumpur. There are a range of serviced suites, corporate offices, shopping malls and co-working spaces, not to mention, great varieties of culinary spots.
However, prices may be a little steep for those who are on a tight budget. The rent for a decent small apartment or condo unit could be from RM3,300.

Mont’Kiara, Kuala Lumpur
Not too far from the city centre, Mont’Kiara is also a good option for those who prefer to stay in the suburb of KL. Surrounded by condominiums, international schools, varieties of eateries and shopping options, Mont’Kiara is another locale that is popular among the expatriates. You may find a studio unit in Mont’Kiara from RM2,500.
Here are some options for you if you would like to rent in Mont’ Kiara.
Penang Island
Located to the north of Peninsular Malaysia is Penang – the mainland and island. If you are looking for beach and seaside as your daily view, Penang island is your ideal choice.
You may find its state capital George Town to be busy yet intriguing as a historical city, while Batu Ferringhi to be laid-back with the sun and sand. Both places are equally convenient as it is easy to travel within the island with a car or public transports such as bus, taxi and ride hailing services.
The city is also known as a foodie haven where you can find delicious local food as well as international cuisine widely available. In short, you will find a hybrid of city and seaside living in Penang.

Langkawi, Kedah
Located in the northwestern side of Peninsular Malaysia, Langkawi is a popular spot for both local and international tourists. The duty-free island is famous for its scenic beaches and UNESCO Global Geopark.
It is an ideal location for digital nomads who want to live away from the hustle and bustle of city life. But note that though internet services are widely available throughout the island, there could be places without connections.

Johor Bahru
Situated in the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia, Johor Bahru (JB) is another ideal option for those who wish to travel between Malaysia and Singapore. Connected by a causeway across the Straits of Johor, it is the gateway between the two countries. JB is the second largest city in Malaysia and is well equipped with facilities and amenities. There are also local neighbouring malls and a wide array of choices for eateries. Rental for a decent apartment unit in JB will be slightly cheaper than in KL, and will cost as low as RM1,600.
Here are some rental listings in Johor Bahru.
