COTTONWOOD, Calif. – After four years of planning, Cottonwood Creek Charter School debuted its gymnasium, the Field House, to the community. After funding help from the Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC).
“The gym project itself was right at $3 million,” said Mark Boyle. “We got a loan from RCAC for about $2.4 million.”
RCAC helped the charter school get a loan from the USDA to help not only benefit the school but also the community.
“I’m most excited about where this is located, the USDA loan focuses on downtown rural areas and on this side of Cottonwood,” Boyle said. “There wasn’t really a community resource for a multipurpose room or something that could be used by the community.”
The Field House Project experienced many delays but that didn’t stop the school board from finishing it.
“COVID really threw the works at it and slowed us way, way, way, down,” said Lynn Peebles. “So it’s not happening at the time that we thought it would happen, but it’s happening, it’s done and it’s here.”
Director Boyle said construction took about a year and a half and he says it was worth the wait.
“Yesterday we brought all the students inside the gym and had a rally and a student-staff volleyball game, which by the way the students won-beat the staff,” he said. “So they’re very excited.”
“For most of the students it was their first time they ever walked in,” Peebles said. “So it was just cool just seeing them walk through the door and seeing their faces go ‘wow,’ so it was great.”
Director Boyle told Action News Now they already have planned community events here at the field house in the coming months.
The Field House hosted its first basketball game Thursday night and has another one planned this weekend.
